Can you remember the first bike race you won and how?
Not the very first, but one of the first was this really hilly club race in a town called Brigadoon in Australia. I was 12 and it was probably one of the hardest loops you could make in Perth, with these steep ramps with 20% gradients up and downhill. It was maybe only 30 or 40km long, but it was a pure climber’s course and I won it solo. I did appreciate the $30 bike voucher that they gave us as a prize in those days too. You could get quite a lot with that: a couple of spare tubes, a new bike light or maybe some other accessories.
