You train hard, race local events, and sit in the “very good” to “excellent” FTP range. On group rides you drop most people. Then you watch the Tour and wonder: how much better are the pros, really?

Power: The Clearest Divider
The key metric is watts per kilogram (W/kg) at threshold:
- Good competitive amateur: 3.5–4.5 W/kg
- Strong Cat 1–2 level: 4.5–5.2 W/kg
- WorldTour pro: 5.5–6.5+ W/kg
- Grand Tour contenders: often 6.0–6.5 W/kg on key climbs
A strong amateur at 4.0 W/kg is already elite among non-pros. A typical pro sits 40–50% higher. On long climbs that difference becomes several minutes.
Engine and Endurance
Pros usually have higher VO2 max (70–85+ ml/kg/min vs. 55–70 for good amateurs) and can sustain a bigger percentage of it. More importantly, they resist fatigue far better. After 4–5 hours of racing they can still produce near-threshold power when most amateurs have faded hard.
Why the Gap Exists
Pros train 20–30+ hours a week with perfect recovery, nutrition, and support. Amateurs fit training around real life. Genetics, years of full-time development, and an optimized professional environment widen the difference further.
The Bottom Line
A good amateur is impressively fit. A WorldTour pro operates on a different plane—roughly the same gap as a solid club runner versus an Olympic finalist. Enjoy your hard rides. Just know the peloton is playing a different sport.
