EUGENE, Ore. – The Washington women’s basketball team (9-6, 1-4) put up a fight at No. 21 Oregon (13-4, 4-2), ultimately dropping a close contest 58-65 on the road Friday night.
“First off, credit to both teams on a well-fought game,” head coach Tina Langley said. “What’s so special about this conference is that every night we get to go out and compete against some of the best teams in the country.”
The Husky offense was electric in the second half, with Haley Van Dyke (14 points), Dalayah Daniels (14), and Lauren Schwartz (10) all scoring in double digits.
Van Dyke’s 14 points was her most in conference play so far this season, while Daniels’s 14 points tied her conference high in scoring so far.
The Husky defense was relentless, recording 11 steals – tied for their most in conference play this season – and forcing 16 turnovers. Prior to the game, Oregon had only been averaging 12.5 turnovers per game.
Jayda Noble was a force on defense, and tied her career high steals with four. Noble also recorded seven rebounds and six points, with some of those points being the end product of a steal. Trinity Oliver was another big contributor, recording six points and leading the team with eight rebounds.
Washington defensive efforts also kept Oregon shooting under their season average, holding the Ducks to 41.1% when their field goal percentage on the season coming into the game was 46.7% (42.4% in conference play).
The Huskies kept it close down to the final minute, and will look to continue their growth as a team.
“We are incredibly proud of the effort and toughness our young women showed tonight, and we are excited to continue working and growing together,” Langley said.
