Enric Mas won big at the Vuelta a España, but not that big.
Mas’ winnings from his dream Vuelta a España victory are dwarved by the supersize payout handed to Tadej Pogačar at the Tour de France.
With a total of €176,800, Spain’s first red jersey in 12 years left Granada with just 29 percent of what Pogačar took from the Tour.
€150k of Mas’ money comes from his GC victory; the balance comes from his stage wins and miscellaneous primes.
By contrast, Pogačar won a whopper €611,980 in assorted prizes at Le Tour – and that’s before thinking of the bank-breaking bonuses UAE Emirates-XRG and his portfolio of personal sponsors would have doled out.
According to Pro Cycling Stats, sprint sensation Matthew Brennan came second in the Vuelta prize rankings with €65,905. Not a bad month’s work for a kid who just turned 21.
But again, in comparison to Evenepoel’s takings of €248k from the Tour, it’s like pocket money.
One funny thing to note – Pogačar was the fifth-highest earner of the Vuelta a España, despite crashing out on stage 8.
The GOAT-ish Slovenian won €42,855 from his three stage wins and eight days wearing red. We’re pretty sure he’d forfeit that if he could have the end of his 2026 season back.
Winners and losers in the Vuelta a España prize money rankings
As we explored here, La Vuelta is the lowest-paying grand tour of the season.
Vuelta a España organizers distributed a total of €1,116,210 in prize money on Sunday. That’s less than half of the €2.3m dished out in July at the Tour de France. The Giro d’Italia splits the difference with a €1.64 million total payout.
For context, the Tour de France Femmes — the richest of the women’s major races — has a total purse of €250,000.
Movistar won’t likely be complaining at the Vuelta’s relatively paltry payouts, however. It might take anything it can get.
Mas led the long-running Spanish team to netting nine times more at the Vuelta than it did at the recent Tour de France.
Movistar won €181,300 in total at La Vuelta. It earned just €19k from a disastrous Tour de France after GC leader Cian Uijtdebroeks crashed out early.
Movistar topped the team prize money rankings from the Vuelta a España, with Visma-Lease a Bike a relatively close second. Brennan and green jersey winner Wout van Aert won the majority of the Killer Bees’ €151,350 total.
But racing isn’t all winners.
Let’s spare a thought for the minnow teams.
Burgos-BH Purpellet, Jayco-AlUla, and Picnic-PostNL didn’t even break €10k after they sent armies of riders, staff, and vehicles to trek from Monaco to Granada.
Burgos won €9k, Jayco won €5k, Picnic won €4k. That wouldn’t even cover their fuel bills from a transfer-heavy race.
