The highly regarded Mexican rider from UAE Team Emirates-XRG finished a lowly 55th on Friday in GP Quebec, crossing the line 3 minutes and 18 seconds behind winner Remco Evenepoel.
Coming off a good 2026 season that included third overall at the Tour de France (plus a stage win and the white jersey as best young rider), Del Toro arrived in Canada as one of the riders to watch and as his team’s leader for the Canadian classics. He stayed with the main group of favorites for much of the 206 km race and even briefly led the chase behind the decisive late break with about 10 km remaining. But he faded badly in the closing kilometers as the pace ramped up, slipping far down the order and finishing well outside the top 10.
The result left him a long way from contention in a race many expected him to challenge for a strong placing, underscoring a tough day on the demanding Quebec City circuit.
He will look to rebound quickly at the Grand Prix Cycliste de Montréal on September 13 as final preparation for the World Championships later in the month.
