Colombian pro Cristian Camilo Muñoz dies after complications from Tour du Jura crash

Terrible news from the pro peloton on Friday.

Cristian Camilo Muñoz Lancheros has died after medical complications linked to a crash at the recent Tour du Jura in France.

His Nu Colombia team confirmed Friday that Muñoz, 30, passed away despite ongoing medical treatment.

The Federación Colombiana de Ciclismo later issued a statement expressing its condolences and recognizing his career and character within the sport.

“With deep pain and dismay, the Colombian Cycling Federation and its Executive Committee mourn the death of the talented Boyacá athlete Cristian Camilo Muñoz Lancheros,” the statement read. “His departure leaves an immense void in Colombian cycling and in the hearts of all those who had the privilege of knowing him. Cristian will be remembered for his dedication, discipline and human quality inside and outside the peloton.”

The crash

According to the team, Muñoz initially received treatment after the incident Saturday at the Tour du Jura. After the fall he injured his knee. At first, that seemed to be the exent of his injuries. But things quickly became much worse. Further examinations revealed more serious complications.

Doctors identified an infection that required immediate treatment, but his condition worsened in recent days. Despite medical efforts, he died from those complications.

Following the news of his death, the team announced it would withdraw from the Vuelta a Asturias.

Muñoz’s career

Muñoz began riding with the Conti team Equipo de ciclismo Coldeportes Zenu in 207. Eventually he rode for UAE Team Emirates between 2019 and 2021.

Some of his top results include the mountains classification at the Clásico RCN, as well as stage wins at the Clásica de Anapoima and Vuelta a Boyacá. He also won the points jersey at the Vuelta de la Juventud, and a stage victory at the under-23 Giro d’Italia.
