While winter sports have been in full swing since November, now, in January our basketball and swimming teams dive head first into Northwest Conference play with league titles and NCAA Tournament births at stake. Each team already had a taste of conference action last month, only suffering one combined loss in six league competitions.
Swimming is currently undefeated in conference play and is ready for its stretch January run. Both the men’s and women’s squad will return from their annual training trip with five more NWC meets before postseason play. A household name by now, senior backstroke and freestyle swimmer Tanner Filion will look to repeat his league and national titles from a year ago.
Men’s basketball has made tremendous progress over the past several years and are atop of the league standings after two wins. They will enjoy back-to-back home weekends in January and are poised to make a run at a conference title.
Women’s basketball will join the men on its homestand with conference doubleheaders the norm for the rest of the season. Ranked nationally earlier this season, the perennial NWC power Blues will undoubtedly be in the mix for a conference title by season’s end.
As each team ramps up, so does the gameday experience provided by Whitman Athletics. Bon Appetit will continue to serve an enhanced menu at all Sherwood Center games with select Whitman Athletics apparel also now available for purchase!
