Women’s Basketball Takes Down Montana Tech – Whitman College Athletics

LEWISTON, IdahoSydney Abbott scored 22 points to lead four starters in double figures as the No. 23 Whitman College women’s basketball team took down Montana Tech 72-62 on Friday night at P1FCU Activities Center.

Lindsay Drango dropped 21 points on an excellent night shooting. She shot 4-6 in three pointers and 7-10 overall. Carly Martin and Elena McHargue both added 11 points with Martin dishing out a game-high seven assists and McHargue adding six rebounds.

Tavia Rooney posted team highs of 15 points and six rebounds for Montana Tech.

The Blues (1-1) got off to a fast start when Drango nailed a three pointer then connected on a jumper to lead an 8-0 run to begin the game. The Orediggers remained in the hunt and, after back-to-back buckets from Rooney and Liv Wangerin, shaved the deficit to four points. 

The second quarter saw Whitman push the lead to double digits when Abbott’s jumper gave her team a 29-19 lead with 5:55 to play. Consecutive baskets by Drango kept the lead at double digits but Montana Tech shaved off a few points and the teams headed to the break at 35-28.

Whitman began to pull away in the third quarter. Aubrie Rademacher’s jumper made it a five-point game but the Blues responded with an 11-2 run and led 51-37 with 4:57 remaining in the quarter. Drango nailed a three pointer to extend to Whitman’s largest lead of 16 points.

Whitman and Montana Tech played to an even fourth quarter as the Blues held on for the win.

The Blues next head to California for a four-game road trip beginning at Redlands on Friday, Nov. 18
