CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Big South Conference announced Monday afternoon that Ashlyn Traylor has been named the Big South Freshman of the Week, the fifth weekly award for Traylor who makes history as the first Radford women’s basketball player to ever win the award five times in one season.
Traylor continues to be a big-time threat for opponents after totaling 22 points, six steals, eight assists and 14 rebounds. With the team needing an offensive spark after a low-scoring first half against USC Upstate, Traylor fueled the offense with a pair of three-pointers and a trio of assists over the final 20 minutes. When all was said and done, Traylor finished with her fourth double-double of the season totaling 16 points and 10 rebounds.
With this being Traylor’s fifth freshman of the week award, she passes 1990-91 freshman Shannan Wilkey for most freshman of the week awards in a single season. In the 1991-92 season, Patrinda Toney set the record for most overall weekly awards with five. That record stands to this day, and Traylor has now tied it with her five awards and four weeks still left in the season.
Traylor and the Highlanders will look to stay hot against another week of Big South games. This week’s slate begins with a crucial meeting against Presbyterian inside the Dedmon Center on Wednesday with tip set for 7 p.m. on ESPN+.
