{"id":418,"date":"2022-11-17T10:30:37","date_gmt":"2022-11-17T10:30:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basketball.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/17\/birmingham-medallists-will-inspire-allison-curbishley-scottish-athletics\/"},"modified":"2022-11-17T10:30:37","modified_gmt":"2022-11-17T10:30:37","slug":"birmingham-medallists-will-inspire-allison-curbishley-scottish-athletics","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basketball.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2022\/11\/17\/birmingham-medallists-will-inspire-allison-curbishley-scottish-athletics\/","title":{"rendered":"&#8216;Birmingham medallists will inspire&#8217; &#8211; Allison Curbishley &#8211; Scottish Athletics"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<p class=\"meta-date\">Thursday 17th November 2022<\/p>\n<p>\t\t\t\t\t<\/p>\n<p><strong>Photo by Bobby Gavin<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><em>News that the Alexander Stadium in Birmingham will host the <strong>2026 European Championships<\/strong> has rekindled immediate fond memories of the Team Scotland performance at the <strong>Commonwealth Games<\/strong> in the same arena.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>The tally of eight medals was the best performance by Scotland in athletics for 40 years and the exploits of <strong>Eilish McColgan, Laura Muir, Jake Wightman<\/strong> and others will remain inspirational for years to come.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Scottish Record holder <strong>Allison Curbishley<\/strong> won 400m silver at the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur \u2013 and was Scotland\u2019s only track and field medal that time.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><em>Now, 24 years on, the BBC Radio 5 Live athletics summariser, reflects on Team Scotland\u2019s athletics medal haul at Birmingham 2022 and what it means for the future of the sport.<\/em><\/p>\n<p><strong>\u00a0By Allison Curbishley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u2018If you look back at the Scotland team I was in in 1998 . . . they were good athletes, but they weren\u2019t necessarily household names.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018At Birmingham 2022, a number of the athletes that performed well weren\u2019t a surprise; they\u2019d been in the system with either <strong>scottish<\/strong>athletics or British Athletics for a number of years and we\u2019d all watched their progression.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018There\u2019s just this ethos now that Scots <em>can<\/em> compete, and I think it was borne out of 2014. Although it wasn\u2019t a great medal haul for the athletics team in Glasgow, it was the start. We\u2019d built on 2012 and we had talent. The focus for a lot of athletes was the build-up to the 2000 Olympics, but the Commonwealths for me was just such an amazing opportunity . . .<\/p>\n<p>\u2018You hear Jake (Wightman) talk about it in 2018, you get that medal at the Commonwealth Games, and it almost spurs you onto great things. WOW. I mean, I actually did everything that you\u2019re not meant to do on 5 Live.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018I thought I\u2019d become really strict with myself, but when we\u2019re playing out the race commentary from <strong>Mike (Costello)<\/strong> you can just hear me screaming in the background.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018It was just everything about that race. It was world class timewise and the quality of the field she was beating, but it was just the way she did it.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Honestly, I never thought I\u2019d hear the noise that was created in Birmingham that night. I thought that was parked in 2012.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018A close second was seeing Laura (Muir) win in a Scottish vest. But if you have not got medallists, then you don\u2019t have anything to really feed off.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Laura talks about watching Eilish run and without a doubt that helps motivate you.<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Eilish talks about returning to the dining halls in the Village and the guys had all decorated her room and put flags up everywhere.
