Well, actually, more like 3,000 of them.<\/p>\n<p>In the latest twist in the Bike Lane Drama\u2122 in Alberta, local cyclists brought around 3,000 postcards to the Alberta legislature in Edmonton. They asked Transportation Minister Devin Dreeshen to reconsider proposed legislation that would give the province greater control over municipal bike lanes.<\/p>\n<p>According to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/other\/advocates-protesting-provincial-overreach-on-bike-lanes-hand-deliver-thousands-of-postcards-to-legislature\/ar-AA2cYMZP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBC<\/a> more than 2,000 of the postcards came from Edmonton, with hundreds more submitted by Calgary residents. The cards described why cycling infrastructure matters to residents, according to organizers.<\/p>\n<h2>Bike lanes in Alberta<\/h2>\n<p>If you\u2019ve been following the bike lane saga, Alberta Edition, it\u2019s all about some proposed legislation\u2013that is similar to some passed laws in Ontario. In 2024, Premier Doug Ford passed some legislation that took power away from municipalities when it comes to decision making about bike lanes. That became a huge legal battle between cycling advocates in Ontario, and Toronto. Ford also wanted to remove some bike lanes on three major corridors.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"wp-embedded-content\" data-secret=\"KrDpFqSeA5\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/cyclingmagazine.ca\/sections\/news\/of-course-theres-a-car-parked-in-the-bike-lane-in-doug-fords-video\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Of course there\u2019s a car parked in the bike lane in Doug Ford\u2019s video<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe class=\"wp-embedded-content\" sandbox=\"allow-scripts\" security=\"restricted\" style=\"position: absolute; visibility: hidden;\" title=\"\u201cOf course there\u2019s a car parked in the bike lane in Doug Ford\u2019s video\u201d \u2014 Canadian Cycling Magazine\" src=\"https:\/\/cyclingmagazine.ca\/sections\/news\/of-course-theres-a-car-parked-in-the-bike-lane-in-doug-fords-video\/embed\/#?secret=17qo7LBMOv#?secret=KrDpFqSeA5\" data-secret=\"KrDpFqSeA5\" width=\"600\" height=\"338\" frameborder=\"0\" marginwidth=\"0\" marginheight=\"0\" scrolling=\"no\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>There was a Charter challenge\u2013won by Cycle Toronto and others. But it was then overturned. Now, the province is looking to go ahead with bike lane removals\u2013but it\u2019s unclear the timeline.<\/p>\n<p>But over in Alberta, Dreeshen has said the proposal would be coming this fall. Just like in Ontario, the legislation would give the province a role in approving new bike lanes and could allow it to remove existing ones. In Ontario, it\u2019s been going on even longer\u2013and as of now, the government seems to be winning.<\/p>\n<h2>Feedback from cyclists<\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.msn.com\/en-ca\/news\/other\/advocates-protesting-provincial-overreach-on-bike-lanes-hand-deliver-thousands-of-postcards-to-legislature\/ar-AA2cYMZP\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">CBC<\/a> spoke to some of the advocates.<\/p>\n<p>Doug Clark, president of Bike Calgary, said the volume of postcards should demonstrate how strongly some residents feel about the issue.
