Today, the third-generation Canyon Grail launches with build options at the CFR, CF SLX, and CF price points, and this bike is bringing all the goodies. Rather than focus exclusively on either aero or weight, the new Grail offers a frame weight of 989g at the CFR level, alongside a claim of less aerodynamic drag than a Cerv\u00e9lo \u00c1spero-5 or Factor Ostro Gravel. Canyon also claims that with a 40mm tire, the new bike is 5.7 watts faster at 35 km\/h compared to the old bike.<\/p>\n
The real news, though, is not aero claims at 40mm. The second-generation bike was only able to fit a max of 42mm, but this time, the third-gen frame will clear a 57mm tire. Even more impressively, Canyon claims the new bike running a 55mm tire is 2.1 watts faster (again at 35 km\/h) compared to the old bike running a 40mm tire. That\u2019s big and if you lean more on the geometry side of things, that massive clearance is paired with a 435mm chainstay and a 71.5-degree head tube angle (on sizes S-L).<\/p>\n In 2026, a gravel bike that doesn\u2019t fit at least a 50mm tire is a non-starter, but sticking right at that 50mm mark rarely keeps people happy. Canyon tells this story through the lens of sponsored athlete Rosa Kl\u00f6ser, who made it incredibly clear that 50mm was simply not enough.<\/p>\n This push for volume is expected in modern gravel, but accommodating huge tires often ends up dominating the design and personality of a bike. While some companies manage clearance as an option with design compromises, Canyon reached for 2.25-inch clearance at the direct expense of 2x compatibility.<\/p>\n Moving to a 1x-only platform wasn\u2019t enough on its own. To create more room, Canyon altered the geometry, lengthening the chainstays to 435mm and extending the overall wheelbase by 10mm. This adds high-speed stability, but it doesn\u2019t fully solve the tight pinch point where the tire, crank, and chainstays fight for space.<\/p>\n To solve this, Canyon had to rethink chainstay construction. Similar to what we saw in the latest Factor Elara launch, Canyon had to squeeze the chainstay width. Factor went with a true monocoque to make that work while the Canyon team instead designed a solid driveside chainstay.<\/p>\n The final piece of the puzzle is the bottom bracket. The rear tire dictated a wide rear end, so Canyon stuck with the PF86 standard. While many brands are shifting back to threaded bottom brackets, Canyon argues that the wider PF86 shell not only creates the necessary room for the tires but also delivers a stiffer pedaling platform.<\/p>\n Pushing a gravel bike to clear a 57mm tire usually comes with a penalty. You need more material, a wider stance, and a reinforced bottom bracket area, which generally pushes frame weights well over the 1,100g mark. Canyon, however, managed to implement a solid driveside chainstay and a wide PF86 bottom bracket shell while keeping the top-tier CFR frame at just 989g. For a bike engineered to handle 2.25-inch rubber, that is a competitive number, and complete builds are quoted as being as light as the Grail CFR AXS build at 7.9kg.<\/p>\n Canyon didn\u2019t leave this as a lightweight-only bike, though; the engineering expertise in the carbon is matched with aero claims. Notably, those aero claims don\u2019t come with a 45 km\/h tag applied to them. Instead, Canyon optimized the tube shapes for a more realistic gravel race pace of 35 km\/h. You\u2019ve already seen that Canyon claims impressive numbers, but it\u2019s important to understand just how impressive those numbers are based on the speed. Typically, a brand would be thrilled to see 5.7 watts of aero improvement even at 45 km\/h. For this launch, Canyon is claiming that wind tunnel testing shows the Gen 3 Grail running a 40mm tire is 5.7 watts faster at 35 km\/h than the Gen 2 bike on the exact same tires. But the really impressive number is that the new bike is claimed to be faster even with a 15mm wider rear tire. If the claims are true, you get the grip, the comfort, and the capability, without paying an aerodynamic tax.<\/p>\n With big tire clearance dictating the frame design, the wheel choice becomes incredibly important. Canyon is using the Gen 3 Grail launch as an opportunity to introduce a new carbon wheelset, the GR 50 CF. The rims feature a progressive 27mm internal width paired with a 38.5mm external width. Interestingly, while other brands have gone to a wider internal width in the last few years, Canyon has stayed conservative and is blaming the ETRTO. It\u2019s a bit of a PR stretch, but it is technically true: 27mm is the maximum internal width ETRTO allows if you still want blanket compatibility with the 35mm end of Canyon\u2019s suggested 35-60mm tire range.<\/p>\n Regardless of that, the build relies on 50mm deep rims laced to DT Swiss 350 hubs with DT Swiss Aerocomp II spokes. That combination yields a claimed weight of 1,675 grams for the taped pair with a microspline freehub installed. Canyon also throws in a spare XD-R freehub body\u2014a practical touch for home wrenchers that keeps you from getting locked into a single drivetrain ecosystem down the line. On the aero side, the brand benchmarked the GR 50 CF against the narrower DT Swiss GRC 1400, claiming these wider rims maintain competitive drag numbers without sacrificing handling stability.
