He might be getting worried about his fourth place on GC, which is coming under pressure from Kuss. Kuss is now almost five minutes ahead of them up the road, which is most of the 5:47 he needs to overtake Carapaz on GC.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:36:55+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:36:55.877Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-kom-puerto-de-el-duque\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-kom-puerto-de-el-duque\"><span>KOM &#8211; PUERTO DE EL DUQUE<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-67bee950-aeb7-11f1-81e5-ff16e7973b2a\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Landa leads the trio of himself, Debruyne and Johannessen which means Buitrago is now poised to win the KOM jersey, with Van Aert not among the top points.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Further down the mountain, the GC riders are playing games with each other, watching each other and riding slowly rather than working together. Gall and Carapaz briefly let a gap grow to the others, but bridged it back. They&#8217;re calling Mas&#8217; bluff &#8211; he needs to ride at some point to defend the red jersey from Kuss, who is getting a bigger and bigger gap out front.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:32:34+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:32:34.145Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-cbae6ffe-aeb6-11f1-b6be-67ca55f71f77\">Carapaz has tried a couple of attacks the last kilometre or so, but neither were as vicious as earlier. After the first Rodriguez bridged back up to them, and set up a second Carapaz attack, but he again did not succeed in dropping Mas, Gall and Rogli\u010d, who are all now riding together.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:27:27+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:27:27.457Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-14bf3de6-aeb6-11f1-b664-97e5b4d9bb00\">Carapaz has a new teammate with him to set the pace on the climb, Juan Felipe Rodriguez, and he&#8217;s reduced the group to just themselves, Mas, Gall and Rogli\u010d. Rogli\u010d appears to be struggling, and is has let the smallest of gaps open up between himself and the others on the steep gradients.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:23:37+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:23:37.223Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8b9a84ee-aeb5-11f1-b653-a7d0d3a01d07\">Rogli\u010d has already burned through his teammates, and is now leading the group instead. It&#8217;s not an attack, but he&#8217;s trying to ride a tempo to make Mas uncomfortable. Landa, Johannessen and Debruyne have gone clear of the rest &#8211; including Van Aert, who looks set to lose out on the mountains jersey after all.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">And back in the group of favourites, Red Bull have some teammates (Vermeersch and Thornley) who have dropped back, and are setting the pace for Rogli\u010d on the run-in to the final climb. Could this be where he makes his move on the red jersey?<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:16:31+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:16:31.850Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-8e008a5e-aeb4-11f1-b8dc-c565846ded2c\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">There are more changes on the road: Buitrago has been dropped, and is back in the red jersey group, meaning the defence of his King of the Mountains is now out of his hands, and dependent on Van Aert not claiming enough points.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Garc\u00eda Pierna is now fulfilling the role he worked so hard earlier in the day to be able to do, and has dropped back to the red jersey group to assist Mas. And ahead, Debruyne has joined Landa in making the juncture from the chase group behind to the lead group.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:12:49+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:12:49.391Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-40km-to-go\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-40km-to-go\"><span>40KM TO GO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-09625ef8-aeb4-11f1-bf3a-87ca66414e93\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The situation as they ride up the penultimate climb of the day, Puerto de El Duque (7.4km at 8.2%), is that the lead group of 8 (Van Aert, Johannessen, Kron, Dalby, Oliveira, Fisher-Black, Miguel and Landa) are about 6 minutes ahead of Kuss, with many riders in between, and Kuss is 2:30 ahead of the red jersey group (now containing Mas, Rogli\u010d, Gall, Carapaz), and 5 minutes ahead of Onley and Omrzel.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T14:06:29+00:00\">2026-09-12T14:06:29.069Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-intermediate-sprint\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-intermediate-sprint\"><span>INTERMEDIATE SPRINT<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-26e83926-aeb3-11f1-aa90-7d6b78c48a9b\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Van Aert slips to the front of the group to add more points in the green jersey classification, but it&#8217;s the mountain jersey he&#8217;s after today. Thans to the pace set by Uno-X Mobility, his lead group is still 1:40 up on the Buitrago group, meaning he has a chance of gaining the jersey, if he can win the points at the top of the climb they&#8217;re about to begin, and finish at last third on the summit finish.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">If he can do it, Van Aert will become the first rider to win both the points and mountains classification at a Vuelta since Mar\u00eda Jim\u00e9nez in 2001.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T13:59:15+00:00\">2026-09-12T13:59:15.067Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-23f383f2-aeb2-11f1-96ab-43dc29e88dc9\">For all the action today, the GC remains as you were, with one exception &#8211; Sepp Kuss, who is now all the way up to virtual fifth place. He&#8217;s a long way away from moving further up, but has every chance of maintaining fifth, as Onley and the others are struggling behind without teammates, while Kuss still has Nordhagen and Armirail up the road to help him.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T13:51:57+00:00\">2026-09-12T13:51:57.077Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-1f0a3c24-aeb1-11f1-83cd-df2ffce22444\">Most of today&#8217;s stage has been defined by riders dropping back from out front to the peloton, but we&#8217;ve just had a big name join the front group from behind &#8211; Mikel Landa. The veteran has been quiet all Vuelta, but must be on flying form to make up so much ground. Could he claim what would be a romantic stage win?<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T13:46:15+00:00\">2026-09-12T13:46:15.737Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-attack-carapaz\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-attack-carapaz\"><span>ATTACK &#8211; CARAPAZ<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-53674d14-aeb0-11f1-b3ad-d7b677625a45\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Carapaz has made another move on the climb! He got a gap, but was brought back by Mas, Gall and Rogli\u010d.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">With a few teammates still up the road in Shaw, Rafferty and Rodriguez, if he can get more of a gap with one of these attacks, he has support up the road to try and build a lead to make a move on the podium.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T13:41:05+00:00\">2026-09-12T13:41:05.604Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-kom-puerto-de-el-purche-2nd-ascent\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-kom-puerto-de-el-purche-2nd-ascent\"><span>KOM &#8211; PUERTO DE EL PURCHE (2ND ASCENT)<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-9a8d4ea6-aeaf-11f1-ae1f-d58015719de4\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Van Aert picks up another ten points at the summit, despite a sprint and desperate lunge from Bahrain&#8217;s Miguel. He&#8217;s now left with just 16 points to make up on Van Aert, with ten available on the upcoming climb, and twenty on the final ascent to the finish. He&#8217;s got a chance!<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">As for the stage win, for all the action behind, the lead group are still over eight minutes ahead of the group of favourites. It&#8217;s only a steady pace, though, and Kuss has already built a lead of 30 seconds over them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T13:30:52+00:00\">2026-09-12T13:30:52.813Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-attack-kuss\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-attack-kuss\"><span>ATTACK &#8211; KUSS<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-2d5ca170-aeae-11f1-8e19-8b96dd74b9ab\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Kuss has gone again! His Visma teammate Kruijswijk had been setting the pace, but now the American has gone solo. There&#8217;s a slowdown in the GC group, as their positions aren&#8217;t under threat from Kuss.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T13:25:50+00:00\">2026-09-12T13:25:50.244Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-79144aa6-aead-11f1-9358-6dca1a9a82e6\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">This is a picture earlier from MacKellar, back when he was in the main chase group. He&#8217;s since dropped back, and has just finished doing a long, important turn for Carapaz in the group of favourites.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">They&#8217;re putting a lot of time into the group behind, which contains Onley and Omrzel, which is now almost three minutes behind. As do EF, who have a few domestiques helping Movistar lead the pace. There&#8217;s plenty of investment in this group, but they&#8217;re almost a minute behind.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T11:34:17+00:00\">2026-09-12T11:34:17.487Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-140km-to-go\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-140km-to-go\"><span>140KM TO GO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-e4c6c950-ae9d-11f1-8e8a-2d13e61756f4\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The ploy isn&#8217;t working for Movistar, as the chase group led by Romeo and Garc\u00eda Pierna (and EF, who are contributing now) are failing to make up ground on the leaders, being kept at 35 seconds. Riccitello is one of them, and thankfully for his team leader Gall, he&#8217;s back on white bike. But Hamilton looks hurt, and will likely abandon the race.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T11:19:57+00:00\">2026-09-12T11:19:57.387Z<\/time><br \/>\n<a id=\"elk-150km-to-go\"\/><\/p>\n<h3 class=\"article-body__section\" id=\"section-150km-to-go\"><span>150KM TO GO<\/span><\/h3>\n<p id=\"elk-e444576a-ae9b-11f1-8698-45c8ebd416bd\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">The Movistar duo are still riding, and have picked up some riders between the peloton and the lead group on their way &#8211; including more EF and Red Bull teammates. They&#8217;re committed to the move, and are desperate to make up the remaining 15 seconds they need to join the lead group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T11:16:49+00:00\">2026-09-12T11:16:49.645Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-741ecb00-ae9b-11f1-8376-6589fd669b9b\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">Are Movistar panicking?Having set a pace for a few kilometres, they\u2019ve now fired a couple of riders up the road, Garcia Pierna and Romeo, in an attempt to bridge up to the break.<\/p>\n<p aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\">They must be feeling anxious at having nobody in the break especially as Rogli\u010d has a couple, but are also toeing up rival teammates Thornely (of Red Bull) and Shaw (of EF). But these are questionable tactics, and they could be burning off key domestiques very early.<\/p>\n<p><a id=\"elk-seasonal\" aria-hidden=\"true\" class=\"kiosq-b\"\/><\/p>\n<aside data-article-category=\"pro-cycling\" data-block-type=\"embed\" data-render-type=\"fte\" data-skip=\"dealsy\" data-widget-type=\"seasonal\" class=\"ecom-root\"\/>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"wcp-item-content\">\n<time class=\"no-wrap live-feed-date\" datetime=\"2026-09-12T11:12:31+00:00\">2026-09-12T11:12:31.342Z<\/time><\/p>\n<p id=\"elk-da38b5a0-ae9a-11f1-8a1d-4b6b78a8ebc2\">Uno-X Mobility have almost their entire roster in this breakaway, with six riders present, including their best climber Tobias Halland Johannessen. Cofidis also have two, as does Rogli\u010d&#8217;s RedBull with Vermeersch and Fisher-Black. The first 40km are about as flat as this stage gets, and even they take place on rolling terrain.
