More than a year later, the Luka Doncic trade is still catching strays, this time from the President of the United States.<\/p>\n
Donald Trump took aim at the Dallas Mavericks\u2019 infamous decision to trade Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers while speaking at a midterm convention at American Airlines Center in Dallas.<\/p>\n
And despite admitting basketball isn\u2019t exactly his area of expertise, Trump couldn\u2019t understand what the Mavericks were thinking.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis is a big Dallas Mavericks team, which is going to be hopefully good. I must tell you, I don\u2019t understand the trade,\u201d Trump said. \u201cThat trade is not \u2014 what do I know about basketball? I would say it\u2019s not going to go down as the greatest trade in the history of sports. It might go down as the worst trade in the history of sports.\u201d<\/p>\n
Trump then spoke of Boston Red Sox selling Babe Ruth to the New York Yankees in 1919, a move that became one of the most infamous transactions in American sports history.<\/p>\n
\u201cNo, actually, ok, you know the worst trade in the history of sports, right?,\u201d he said. \u201cThe great Babe Ruth. Babe Ruth, 19-year old pitcher, for a 36 year old third baseman and $100,000. At that time that was like $10 million I guess, because Boston needed money. So Babe will always be the worst trade.\u201d<\/p>\n
But Trump wasn\u2019t finished.<\/p>\n
He then jokingly offered the Mavericks a solution that some Dallas fans would probably be more than happy to accept.<\/p>\n
\u201cBut uh\u2026 is it Luka? That\u2019s not a good \u2013 that wasn\u2019t good,\u201d Trump said. \u201cMaybe we could redo that trade. I redo deals all the time. We gotta redo that deal. I don\u2019t get that deal.\u201d<\/p>\n
The Mavericks stunned the basketball world in February 2025 when they sent Doncic to the Lakers in exchange for Anthony Davis, Max Christie and a 2029 first-round pick.<\/p>\n
And the return has only looked worse with time, with Davis having already been moved on to the Washington Wizards.<\/p>\n
Even with Flagg emerging as the franchise\u2019s new cornerstone, the decision to trade Doncic isn\u2019t getting any easier to explain.<\/p>\n
Just ask the President.<\/p>\n
