{"id":120405,"date":"2026-05-12T09:06:13","date_gmt":"2026-05-12T09:06:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/basketball.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/12\/lidl-trek-impatient-for-win-after-rough-giro-ditalia-opening\/"},"modified":"2026-05-12T09:06:13","modified_gmt":"2026-05-12T09:06:13","slug":"lidl-trek-impatient-for-win-after-rough-giro-ditalia-opening","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/basketball.runfyers.com\/index.php\/2026\/05\/12\/lidl-trek-impatient-for-win-after-rough-giro-ditalia-opening\/","title":{"rendered":"Lidl-Trek Impatient for Win After Rough Giro d&#8217;Italia Opening"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"article-body\">\n<p>Published May 12, 2026 03:06AM<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/lidl-trek\" rel=\"noopener\">Lidl-Trek<\/a> rolled out of the opening weekend of the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/giro-ditalia\" rel=\"noopener\">Giro d\u2019Italia<\/a> without a stage win, without the pink jersey, and with its general classification leader <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/derek-gee\" rel=\"noopener\">Derek Gee-West<\/a> battered and chasing time.<\/p>\n<p>Hardly what the wannabe super team was envisioning for the start of the season\u2019s first grand tour.<\/p>\n<p>With <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/lidl-trek-new-german-identity\/\" rel=\"noopener\">German superstore\u2019s big-money backing<\/a> only raising expectations across 2026, this Giro is supposed to mark a turning point.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, the team is facing even more pressure after a stop-start spring campaign marked by crashes, illness, and near-misses.<\/p>\n<p>Sprinter ace <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/jonathan-milan\" rel=\"noopener\">Jonathan Milan<\/a> came close to <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/giro-ditalia\/giro-ditalia-stage-1-mass-pileup-causes-late-carnage-before-magnier-sprints-into-pink-jersey\/\" rel=\"noopener\">delivering the dream opening<\/a> with a stage win and the pink jersey, but instead twice finished second to Paul Magnier.<\/p>\n<p>As the race returns to Italy on Tuesday, he\u2019s the team\u2019s best bet to quickly change the narrative.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m not demoralized by these results,\u201d Milan told <em>RAI<\/em>. \u201cI\u2019m starting to feel a bit better day by day. We did what we wanted to do [Sunday], even if the result wasn\u2019t what we wanted. I will try to win and enjoy myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the rocky start, Lidl-Trek is impatient to punch into the win column.<\/p>\n<p>Things will get a lot better real fast if the team can knock down a win sooner than later.<\/p>\n<h2>Crash chaos hits GC hopes<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_985584\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">Gee-Wes, left, speaks with teammate Teutenberg over the weekend. <\/span> (Photo: Dario Belingheri\/Getty Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Canadian <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/giro-ditalia\/sepp-kuss-americans-giro-ditalia-gee-sheffield\/\" rel=\"noopener\">GC hope Gee-West<\/a> was caught up in the stage 2 crash chaos in Bulgaria that ripped through the peloton Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Banged up and bruised, it was not the start he was looking for following his high-profile split from former Israel Premier Tech to join Lidl-Trek <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/derek-gee-moves-on-after-cyclings-ugliest-divorce\/\" rel=\"noopener\">after a protracted contract fight<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m beaten up, but not so bad, considering how some of the guys ended up. I feel pretty lucky,\u201d Gee-West said.<\/p>\n<p>The 28-year-old fought back after the crash but eventually lost contact, conceding 1:11 and slipping to 48th overall heading into Tuesday\u2019s stage 4.<\/p>\n<p>The early setback mirrors last year\u2019s <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.giroditalia.it\" rel=\"noopener\">Giro opening<\/a>, when Gee-West also lost time in the \u201cbig start\u201d in Albania before recovering deep into the race to finish fourth overall.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s something I\u2019m used to now, losing a minute right out of the gates,\u201d he said with a wry laugh. \u201cObviously not the nicest way to do it, but my legs felt OK. I think at the end of the race, hopefully a minute doesn\u2019t decide a spot one way or the other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Despite the crash, he remains in the race \u2014 something that cannot be said for the <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/giro-ditalia\/giro-ditalia-adam-yates-out\/\" rel=\"noopener\">likes of Adam Yates and Jay Vine<\/a> \u2014 and is banking on recovery before the first decisive mountain stage at <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/giro-ditalia\/giro-ditalia-2026-route-decisive-stages\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Blockhaus later this week<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI saw guys in front of me hitting the deck, then I hit the deck, and then I saw a lot of guys on the ground. It\u2019s never nice to see,\u201d Gee-West said. \u201cI haven\u2019t heard how everyone\u2019s doing, but it was a pretty nasty one.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Big budget, thin returns<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_985503\" class=\"pom-image-wrap photo-alignnone\"><img alt=\"Giro d'Italia 2026 - Stage 3 - HarryTalbot-1995-2\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"476\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" class=\"alignnone size-medium wp-image-985503\" style=\"color:transparent\" srcset=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Giro-dItalia-2026-Stage-3-HarryTalbot-1995-2-720x476.jpg?width=750&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover 1x, https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Giro-dItalia-2026-Stage-3-HarryTalbot-1995-2-720x476.jpg?width=1920&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover 2x\" src=\"https:\/\/velo-cdn.outsideonline.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/05\/Giro-dItalia-2026-Stage-3-HarryTalbot-1995-2-720x476.jpg?width=1920&amp;auto=webp&amp;quality=75&amp;fit=cover\"\/><figcaption class=\"pom-caption\"><span class=\"article__caption\">The pressure is on Milan, left, to deliver some wins.<\/span> (Photo: Gruber Images)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Lidl-Trek comes into the 2026 Giro ambitious to prove it belongs in the top tier of the WorldTour.<\/p>\n<p>Global super market chain <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/lidl-trek-new-german-identity\/\" rel=\"noopener\">Lidl bought controlling interest of the team\u2019s license<\/a>, and is pressing the gas for bigger and better results.<\/p>\n<p>After a promising start with marquee signing <a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/juan-ayuso\" rel=\"noopener\">Juan Ayuso<\/a>, who beat back wonder boy Paul Seixas at the Volta ao Algarve in February, it\u2019s been a stop-start season ever since.<\/p>\n<p><a target=\"_self\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/tag\/mads-pedersen\" rel=\"noopener\">Mads Pedersen<\/a> crashed on his opening race day in February, fought back to race the cobbled classics, and stacked up an impressive string of top-10s, but fell short of landing a big win.<\/p>\n<p>Mattias Skjelmose was solid all spring, but rising prospect Thibau Nys has yet to race on the road, nursing a knee injury.<\/p>\n<p>There are now fresh question marks around Ayuso.<\/p>\n<p>Since the Algarve, the Spanish rider failed to finish both Paris-Nice and Itzulia Basque Country, first with a crash and later with illness, and won\u2019t race again until the Tour Auvergne-Rh\u00f4ne-Alpes (former Dauphin\u00e9) in June.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s why there\u2019s added pressure on the Giro squad for Lidl-Trek.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s currently ranked 10th in the WorldTour and also 10th in victories so far in 2026, not bad, but team brass wants more.<\/p>\n<p>Milan has delivered the bulk of the results, accounting for six of the team\u2019s eight wins so far in 2026, with Ayuso the other two.<\/p>\n<p>With a rest day already in the books and no major climbs until later this week, Gee-West hopes he can recover and deliver on his end of the bargain. Giulio Ciccone, third in stage 2, is the team\u2019s plan B.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not terrible timing,\u201d Gee-West said of Tuesday\u2019s expected bunch kick. \u201cAt least it gives me a bit of time to come around.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Twice second to French ace Magnier, Milan is equally confident it\u2019s only a matter of time before the wins start raining down.<\/p>\n<p>After winning two stages and the green jersey in last year\u2019s Tour de France and twice points winner at the Giro in 2023 and 2024, Milan is the top favored sprinter in this Giro.<\/p>\n<p>Anything less than a few wins would be disappointing (again).<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/lidl-trek-derek-gee-west-crash-gc-milan-giro-ditalia\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Published May 12, 2026 03:06AM Lidl-Trek rolled out of the opening weekend of the Giro d\u2019Italia without a stage win, without the pink jersey, and with its general classification leader Derek Gee-West battered and chasing time.
