Van der Poel was running a different pedal system than the rest of his teammates.<\/p>\n<p>That left Van der Poel stranded without a bike at the most crucial moment of Sunday\u2019s epic race.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe rode with different pedals\u201d, he said. \u201cNormally, I don\u2019t take Jasper\u2019s bike either, but I think he didn\u2019t feel great. I tried to get out of the Arenberg, but it was impossible, and then I took my own bike back, but then I flatted again, and I knew my race was over.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In a fast and brutal sequence of events, the Arenberg turned into a full-blown nightmare for the three-time defending champion.<\/p>\n<p>Behind the chaos, the Alpecin car was stuck in traffic. Van der Poel was stranded as the race slipped away.<\/p>\n<p>Teammate and former runner-up Jasper Philipsen stopped to offer his bike, but he couldn\u2019t clip in due to the incompatible pedal system.<\/p>\n<p>MVDP rolled a few meters, then threw the bike\u00a0aside in frustration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOf course, that came together at an incredibly bad time. I never thought it would happen,\u201d Alpecin boss Christoph Roodhooft told <a target=\"_blank\" class=\"text-brand-primary underline hover:text-brand-primary\/85 break-words overflow-wrap-anywhere underline-offset-[3px]\" data-afl-p=\"0\" href=\"https:\/\/sporza.be\/nl\/2026\/04\/12\/-mijn-koers-was-al-over-in-het-bos-mathieu-van-der-poel-baalt-na-pechkoers-maar-gunt-van-aert-zege-zoals-iedereen~1775996056720\/?ref=https%3A%2F%2Fsporza.be%2Fnl%2F2026%2F04%2F12%2Fdeed-prototype-pedalen-van-der-poel-de-das-om-nooit-gedacht-al-ziet-ploeg-ook-andere-oorzaken-voor-drama~1776005755228%2F&amp;edge_id=cx:3agaofpeoi7jkqe2vgnuwv85:25csnm43ob060&amp;newUser=true\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Sporza<\/em><\/a>. \u201cWe made the decision to use the pedals in race conditions.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tibor Del Grosso saw the disaster unfold from the front row and tried to salvage something.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy rear wheel was broken, so I thought I could still try to put my front wheel in Mathieu\u2019s bike\u201d, Del Grosso told <em>Sporza<\/em>. \u201cMy race was over anyway. Before exiting Arenberg, Van der Poel punctured again while\u00a0riding on a teammate\u2019s wheel.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had two flat tires and two minutes behind, and then you know the race was over,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>In a race where equipment can make or break the outcome, Alpecin paid a heavy price on a day when the Dutchman was favored in a generational duel with Poga\u010dar.<\/p>\n<p>Risking the most basic rule of having all the riders on the same equipment bit them, Alpecin saw both MVDP and Philipsen largely taken out in the Arenberg.<\/p>\n<p>Van der Poel was left walking around without a ride as the season\u2019s most important bike race was disappearing up France\u2019s gnarliest roads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI never thought it would come together like this,\u201d Roodhooft said. \u201cIt is what it is. It won\u2019t happen again, but it\u2019s over now.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>By the time the team car reached him, Van der Poel was already more than two minutes down.<\/p>\n<p>He chased all day and clawed back to within 30 seconds of the leaders, but the damage was done.<\/p>\n<p>Jasper Stuyven attacked late from the chase to take third, while Van der Poel finished fourth at 15 seconds back, only the second time in six starts he has missed both victory and the podium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI had to spend so much energy to get back to the group that it was unbelievable that I was still sprinting for the podium,\u201d Van der Poel said.<\/p>\n<p>Even in defeat, he was quick to tip his hat to the winner and longtime rival Van Aert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAfter all the setbacks he\u2019s had, everyone is happy to see him win,\u201d he said. \u201cI am very happy for him.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><!-- --><\/div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/velo.outsideonline.com\/road\/road-racing\/van-der-poel-sunk-by-pedal-fiasco-and-punctures-at-paris-roubaix\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Source link <\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Bad equipment choices and worse luck: How Van der Poel bid for a fourth Paris-Roubaix unraveled in an Arenberg nightmare.
