For years, the Boston Celtics have had a clear hierarchy. Jayson Tatum was the face of the franchise, the go-to scorer, and the player expected to lead them to a title. Many compared him to players like Kobe Bryant.
Jaylen Brown was the co-star. Talented, essential, but still seen as the second option. Often considered some sort of spiritual leader.
That dynamic may no longer hold. It seems like Jaylen Brown has become the new sheriff in town and has taken full advantage of Tatum’s absence. With a squad without stars, they were destined not to compete.
However, the Celtics belong to the top three tiers in the East, even without Tatum. Let’s take a closer look at what he does on-court
Jaylen Brown is taking over as the Boston Celtics’ leader
Brown’s growth has been steady, but recently it feels different. He is not just producing; he is dictating games on both ends of the floor.
His scoring has become more controlled, his decision-making sharper, and his defensive impact more consistent. He looks like a player fully comfortable being the primary option.
More importantly, he is delivering in key moments. That is often the clearest sign of who a team truly trusts when it matters most.
And most importantly, he is a player, which creates team identity. Without Tatum, the Celtics seemed without direction, but Brown delivers and creates direction naturally.
Jayson Tatum’s role is starting to shift and the NBA sees it
Tatum is still an elite player, and that is not up for debate. However, his role within the team appears to be evolving, and he still might be the engine of the team, but maybe not giving direction anymore.
He no longer consistently looks like the unquestioned closer. At times, the offense flows more naturally through Brown, especially late in games.
That does not make Tatum less valuable. It simply changes how he fits within the team’s structure; he also might become tradeable to find better fits for the Celtics.
In many ways, he is starting to resemble the perfect complementary star rather than the central force. Many teams would love to have him on the roster.
The Boston Celtics may be better with this dynamic
This shift is not necessarily a problem for Boston. In fact, it could be exactly what they need. Especially after the disappointing playoff exit last season.
Teams often struggle when roles are unclear, but the Celtics may be settling into a more balanced structure. Brown’s emergence allows Tatum to operate with less pressure and more efficiency.
That combination can be dangerous. A strong 1A and 1B dynamic is often more sustainable than a rigid hierarchy.
However, the perception change is significant. Tatum was long viewed as the “Batman” of this duo.
Now, it is fair to ask whether he has become the “Robin.” If they can manage to settle into these new roles, they could go all in this season.
