At CIN we’re always keen to glean signs that a sector is maturing and for those making space for bicycles to act as an alternative to cars and vans, there are a few obstacles along the road – not least theft. Car insurance is mandatory in the UK, but not so for cargo bikes, an alternative to shifting loads, luggage and people. Due to their size, these are often left on the street overnight – particularly in cities – and so exposed to damage risk. European Cyclists’ Federation (ECF) stats from last year noted that an average of 260,000 bicycles are reported stolen in Germany each year.
Cargo and eBike specialist VELO DE VILLE has teamed up VELOMATE to address this challenge, combining its cargo bikes with digital services and extended insurance cover for the first time. Once activated in the app, the bike is automatically insured for six months – at no extra cost and with no contract commitment. A built-in GPS tracker keeps the bike online at all times and enables it to be located quickly in the event of theft. If the bike is found, the service organises its return. If it remains missing, an equivalent replacement is provided. Damage or missing parts following replacement are also covered.
In addition, riders receive a mobility guarantee with a budget of up to 200 euros, for example for public transport, bike hire or car sharing. This helps them to remain mobile even in the event of a breakdown or theft. The insurance expires automatically after six months and can be extended on request.
Two models from VELO DE VILLE’s cargo portfolio include the LOADY, a longtail cargo bike for everyday life and family. The extended luggage rack creates space for shopping, luggage or children. Despite a heavy load, the bike remains agile and easy to manoeuvre, said the brand. Various module options – including child seats, a weather cover, panniers or a bike hook for children’s bikes – boost the bike’s versatility, so the LOADY can take the children to school in the morning, do the shopping in the afternoon and transport gear for a family outing at the weekend. In keeping with VELO DE VILLE’s ‘custom-made’ principle, the eBike can be fully customised – from frame height and technical specifications right through to the design, with 33 colour options.
For those who regularly transports larger loads whilst wanting to enjoy a familiar riding experience, the SEB PRO CARGO features a robust frame construction and low centre of gravity to ensure that the bike remains safe and controllable even with payloads of up to 60 kilograms. This makes it suitable for shopping and tools as well as for transporting a child or for daily commutes with a laptop and work materials. A powerful electric motor provides reliable assistance when setting off, on inclines or on longer journeys through the city. Despite its high load capacity, the bike remains agile to handle and suitable for everyday use.
