Women’s Basketball Drops First Road Test To Binghamton – Army West Point

VESTAL, N.Y. – Army West Point women’s basketball (1-1, 0-0 PL) suffered its first loss of the season on the road to Binghamton (2-0, 0-0 AE) on Thursday night. Army fell by a score of 76-61 as Sabria Hunter led the Black Knights with 22 points and 14 rebounds.

The Bearcats got on the glass early, with four offensive rebounds within the first four minutes. Army called timeout with 6:19 remaining in the first quarter facing an 11-5 deficit. The Black Knights’ defense responded, with the Bearcats going 1-7 from the field with five turnovers to close out the quarter. Army ended the quarter on an 8-2 run highlighted by a buzzer-beater from Reese Ericson to make the score 16-14 in favor of the home side.

After Army quickly tied the score at 16, Binghamton used an 8-0 spurt to jump out to its biggest lead of the second quarter. Sabria Hunter scored twice on the block before Charlotte Richman knocked in Army’s first and only three-pointer of the first half with 3:23 remaining, cutting the deficit to just one. Hunter added four more points to give her a team-high 11 at the half as the Black Knights trailed 34-31 through 20 minutes.

To start the second half, it was Army this time who put together an 8-0 run, flipping the score to 39-34 through four field goals from Hunter (two), Hope Brown and Sam McNaughton. Binghamton battled back to score six of the next eight baskets, with Army once again going without a three-pointer made in a quarter. The Black Knights trailed 48-43 going into the fourth.

Binghamton got out to a 53-43 lead before Reese Ericson answered with a trey for Army, one of just three three-pointers the Black Knights were able to knock down in the game.

A few possessions later a Sam McNaughton three and a Sabria Hunter layup cut the lead to 60-58 with 3:56 to play in the game. However, that would be the closest Army would get it as the Bearcats would go on a 14-0 scoring run to seal the game. Over the course of Binghamton’s scoring run, Army shot 0-4 from the field with four turnovers down the stretch. Three Bearcats scored in double figures to lead its offensive attack, Denai Bowman (17), Ella Wanzer (15), and Clare Traeger (14).
