New Giant Revolt and Liv Devote Advanced SL go all-in gravel race

Giant and Liv have launched the men’s Revolt Advanced SL and women’s Devote Advanced SL gravel race bikes, with three specs on offer at prices from £5,500 to £10,000 as well as a frameset-only option.

It’s the first time that Giant has offered an Advanced SL grade carbon layup on its gravel bike, with cold blade cutting and a new resin helping to ensure that the frame and fork’s weight are kept to a minimum. The brands claim a 19 watt aero advantage and 288g weight loss over the bikes’ predecessors, despite a tyre width increase from 40mm to 45mm.

New Cadex gravel wheels featured have a 1,280g claimed weight and feature carbon spokes fused to the hub flanges.

Giant says that the aero gains are thanks to developing the frame, fork, cockpit and Cadex wheels and tyres as a single platform. The new bike has already seen action at Unbound 200 this year, where sponsored rider Brendan Johnston finished fourth.

According to Ludi Scholz, Liv gravel and off-road category manager: ‘Gravel racing has evolved incredibly quickly, and women are a huge part of what’s driving that progression. The demands of the sport are higher than ever, and riders are asking more from their equipment.”

All-in race geometry

Giant says that it has tuned the new Revolt/Devote Advanced SL’s geometry for racing, abandoning the previous generation bike’s all-rounder design.

The new bike places the rider in a more aero position that’s longer and lower. For a men’s size M frame, the stack has been reduced from 586mm to 557mm, while reach is now 395mm, up from 387mm, and the seat tube is 1° steeper at 74.5° for more efficient pedalling.

There’s now 53mm tyre clearance on a 1,033mm wheelbase for a men’s size M, with 433mm chainstay length and a 69mm trail, providing more stability at speed. The variable geometry flip-chip in the rear axle that was a feature of previous generations of Giant and Liv’s gravel bikes has been abandoned.

New 1,280g Cadex wheels

The new Revolt/Devote frameset is made of Advanced SL-grade carbon fibre and has an 839g claimed weight, 151g less than the previous model. There’s a 10g decrease in fork weight and Giant claims a 31% stiffness-to-weight increase.

There are more weight savings in the one-piece Contact SLR XR cockpit, which has a 295g claimed weight and, Giant says, improves the bike’s aerodynamics.

The 1,280g claimed weight of the 50mm deep, 25mm internal width Cadex Max GXR gravel bike wheelset fitted to the top spec bikes, Giant says, represents a further 118g decrease, while the wheels are also stiffer and more aero.

The 16 front, 24 rear carbon spokes are fused to the hubs, as in the new Cadex Max 50 road bike wheels, while titanium nipples allow truing and ensure corrosion resistance.

There are 5mm wide hookless sidewalls to reduce the risk of pinch flats, ceramic bearings and a 60-tooth ratchet that ensures fast pick-up. Freehub options cover all the gravel groupset choices, with HG11, XDR, N3W and Micro Spline freehub options available.

Despite being 5mm wider than the tyre in the previous generation Cadex GX wheel/tyre system, the new Cadex GRX wheelset is as aero thanks to a smoother tread pattern, which also reduces the rolling resistance by 3 watts. Cadex says that the wheels are compatible with tyres from 40mm to 57mm wide.

Lower down the range, Giant fits its own CXR 0 wheels with aero carbon spokes and the same Cadex GRX 45mm tyres.
