Some terrible news from Montreal. A 38-year-old cyclist is in critical condition after being struck by two drivers in the Hochelaga-Maisonneuve borough. The incident occured on Tuesday afternoon, just before 4 p.m., according to CityNews.
According to Montreal police, the rider was hit at the intersection of Davidson and Notre-Dame streets.
Investigators believe the cyclist was first hit by one driver and thrown to the ground. Then he was being struck by a second motorist travelling north on Davidson Street.
The man was taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries, according to CityNews.
Neither of the drivers involved was injured in the incident.
Cycling in Montreal
The news comes amid ongoing debates about Montreal’s cycling infrastructure. After a decade of expansion of bike lanes under former mayor Valérie Plante, the new administration has been aiming to remove or cancel future projects.
In April, the city put a planned Réseau express vélo (REV) extension on hold. That was days after Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada dismissed reports the project had stalled, according to the Montreal Gazette.
“It’s an enormous loss if they don’t do it. We have no other options,” Jean-François Gagné of the Association pour la mobilité sécuritaire de Montréal-Nord said. “There are people working on these projects, people who invest their time and energy, and then, at the last minute, they get called off. It feels a bit like we’re being laughed at.”
The identity of the cyclist hit has not been released and no other details are available yet.
