Unreleased Tavelo Road Bike: Aero, 650g, 40mm Clearance

At Sea Otter this year, Tavelo is showing an unreleased, unnamed frame with an incredible feature list and a highly competitive, if not quite final, price tag.

If you aren’t familiar with the name, Tavelo is a well-known Chinese brand producing performance bikes with global availability. At the Taipei Cycle Show, the company showed off a new gravel bike called the Tavelo Grow. This time, the bike is so new that even the name is a work in progress.

What isn’t a work in progress is the frame itself, though you will have to decide how to classify it. On one hand, it’s an aero-optimized road bike featuring the expected details: shielded thru-axle terminations, dropped seatstays, an aero seatpost, and aero shaping behind the fork. Tavelo claims wind tunnel testing with a rider measured drag at 290 watts at 45 km/h.

Depending on wheel choice, it could also easily double as a dedicated climbing bike. The claimed weight for a size medium is 650 grams for the frame and 340 grams for the fork.

Then Tavelo throws a curveball: it also clears a 40mm tire, pushing it firmly into all-road territory.

The brand classifies it as an all-around race bike. Think of it as a Specialized Tarmac with massive tire clearance. Like the Tarmac, it uses a standard BSA threaded bottom bracket. It also utilizes through-headset routing to keep the front end clean, and the stack has been increased by a centimeter (548mm) compared to Tavelo’s dedicated aero bike.

The real hook, however, is the price. While it isn’t finalized, I pushed the company for an estimate, and got it. The bike will be sold as a chassis—including the frame, fork, seatpost, and cockpit (with various options including a standard and high-rise bar/stem)—and the entire package is expected to land under $2,500.
